Travel insurance saved my mum
29
September 2010, By The Star
RECENTLY, on a trip to China with my
81 year-old mother and some friends, we met with an accident. My mom and I were
knocked down by a car. My mom suffered head injuries when she fell and hit her
head on the pavement. We took her to the hospital where it was determined that
she was bleeding in her brain and would be in no condition to travel.
Beside
difficulties in communicating with the locals as their dialect was different
from the Mandarin that we used in Malaysia, I also found out that it was going
to cost a lot of money to treat my mother. Furthermore, the Chinese hospital
would only accept yuan. Since I did not have much yuan with me, I was quite
desperate.
Then I remembered the travel insurance I bought for the trip and
called the emergency number given.
After confirming everything was in order, the
customer service staff arranged for doctors from Malaysia and Beijing to liaise
with the attending doctors at the hospital and to advise and keep me informed.
I
was asked by the company’s doctors whether I wanted to bring my mother home to
Malaysia.
I told them that I did not see how it was possible due to my mother’s
condition.
They assured me that they would make the arrangement and a plane
would be sent over to pick us up. The plane duly arrived as promised.
I was
surprised that the plane had ICU facilities with a doctor and nurse on board. On
arrival in Kuala Lumpur, there was an ambulance waiting to take us to the
hospital requested by me earlier. I was really amazed that for the small premium
that I paid, we were given such VVIP treatment.
As a businesswoman, I was
impressed by the professional manner of their staff in looking after us. With
more Malaysians now traveling, they should not neglect buying travel insurance
from the right company, especially when traveling overseas.
They should also
know what insurance coverage they are getting. I would like to thank all the
staff who looked after us in China and Malaysia, especially Dr Alan, Dr Teoh, Dr
Grey, Ms Sharmini and Ms Lisa. YVONNE YUE, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
19th April 2009, ChoShan Island China.
Madam Tan, aged 65, sustained a fall whilst on a tour in ChoShan Island China. She
sustained a fracture femur and was warded at the local hospital at ChoShan China. Her
tour leader immediately contacted ISOS, Malaysia Insurer Medical Assist for assistance (Arranged by ACPG). Due to
the limited medical facility at this hospital coupled with the patient's
fragility, it was decided to evacuate her back to Malaysia for treatment before
her conditions deteriorated.
Air ambulance was arranged, and with a medical escort team, Madam Tan was
brought back to Malaysia just 3 days after the accident. Upon arrival at the
airport, an ambulance awaited, and transported her to the Sime Darby Medical Center Subang where she was operated upon, and discharged three days
thereafter.
Madam Tan is now on the road to recovery.
Case Study
Mrs Wong* loves to travel. At 56, she has all the time in the world to visit
the places she could only dream about in her youth. Her daughter, Sherene Wong*, enjoys
accompanying her on her trips. As they became seasoned travelers, Sherene Wong realized
that having an enjoyable trip includes planning for safe trip.
"You can plan as much as you can but there are certain things you can just
cannot plan for," she said. "Getting help in an unfamiliar place is a challenge
I can do without."
Early this year, before leaving on their holiday to Canton, Shanghai and
Beijing, Sherene Wong took her usual precautions. She told her family members where they
were going, informed her credit card company, read all about the places that
they were visiting and places to avoid and so on. She also purchased travel
insurance for both of them.
On the third day of their tour, Mrs Wong slipped and fell and fractured her
leg. She was immediately hospitalized and after 3 days, the Wong family decided
that it would be better to transfer Mrs Wong back to Malaysia.
"Luckily we have travel insurance," said Sherene Wong. "It was enough to cover all
the hospital bills in Shanghai, plus the cost of the medical evacuation." They
paid only lowest premiums and were covered for High Sum Insured for medical
expenses that included follow-up treatment in Malaysia. "I can't imagine how we
could have paid for everything on our own," said Sherene Wong.
Today, Mrs Wong is well on the road to recovery and is already planning
another trip. "We haven't decided on the destination yet," said Sherene Wong. "But it'll
be short and relaxed, nothing too taxing, and I certainly will make sure that we
have purchased travel insurance for the trip!"
